Sometimes theological readings of films are an awkward stretch. Trust me, I groan too when I read another “Finding God in The Avengers” article. But there are also films that lend themselves to theological readings—films that are almost begging for it. James Gray’s Ad Astra is one such film.

Science fiction is a genre naturally inclined to Big Questions that often have theological implications. Recent sci-fi films like Arrival, Interstellar, and Annihilation are just a few examples that provide interesting fodder for theological discussion. I still remember the intense conversation about predestination that ensued after I took my church small group to see Arrival in the theater in 2016. Ad Astra is another film like this. Consider taking your small group, or just a friend or loved one, to see this film—then go out for coffee or a meal to discuss it! My review is just one theological angle on this rich and thought-provoking film. Doubtless there are many others. That’s the power of well-made, artful, not-obvious films like this. They are excellent theological conversation starters.
