With Valentine’s Day approaching, you may be on the lookout for a good romantic movie to watch. I wrote about a new one, Solo Mio, today at TGC. If you’re looking for a date night out at the movies, it’s not a bad option. But if you’d rather watch something at home—and avoid the often explicit, sordid, transgressive fare that populates many streaming sites—here are a few of my favorites from the last 20 years which are either PG- or PG-13. Some are dramas and some are comedies, but all are beautifully romantic and celebrate love in relatively wholesome ways.

The New World (Terrence Malick, 2005, PG-13). A category-defying tone poem about love forged amidst the clashing of different worlds. Rent on Amazon.

Pride and Prejudice (Joe Wright, 2005, PG). Jane Austen’s epic romance, elegantly rendered with endearing performances from the whole cast. Watch on Peacock.

Bright Star (Jane Campion, 2009, PG). A lyrically told biographical romance set in Georgian England, about the poet John Keats and his love, Fanny Brawne. Rent on Amazon.

The Fault in Our Stars (Josh Boone, 2014). A tearjerker romance that ponders big questions about life, death, and love in the face of mortality. Watch on Disney+.

Brooklyn (John Crowley, 2015, PG-13). An old-fashioned immigrant love story starring the incredible Saoirse Ronan. Watch on Hulu.

Emma (Autumn de Wilde, 2020, PG). A stylishly contemporary, but thematically faithful, adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. Watch on Peacock.

Past Lives (Celine Song, 2023, PG-13). A refreshing celebration of moral restraint and sticking with commitments in a world where the opposite is often encouraged. Watch on HBO Max.

Whether you watch one of these movies, a new rom-com like Solo Mio, or another favorite, I hope you and your loved ones have an enjoyable Valentine’s Day!
