| We’re officially halfway through 2025. And though it’s usually true that the first half of each year is thinner in the “great movies” department, I always enjoy pausing to reflect on the standouts. In case you missed them and are looking for a good film to watch at home this weekend, here are my top five films of 2025 so far: 5) Paddington in Peru (Dougal Wilson). The long-awaited third film in the beloved Paddington franchise did not disappoint. Rated PG. Watch on Netflix. 4) Materialists (Celine Song). Even if it doesn’t match the sublime beauty of Celine Song’s previous film, Past Lives, Materialists is a refreshing modern romance that captures something of a vibe shift toward sincerity and old-fashioned romance (see my review linked below). Rated R. Now in theaters. 3) The Ballad of Wallis Island (James Griffiths). This British comedy-drama is a generous-hearted, beautifully made gem that captures the power of music to connect people and provide joy even amidst loss. Rated PG-13. Watch on Peacock. 2) Warfare (Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza). Co-directed by a veteran who actually lived the events depicted in the film, Warfare‘s commitment to on-the-ground realism makes it one of the most harrowing, immersive modern war films I’ve seen. Rated R. Available to rent. 1) I’m Still Here (Walter Salles). Technically released in 2024, this Brazilian film won the Oscar for best international film earlier this year. It’s chronicle of a specific part of Brazilian history but also a beautifully universal celebration of the goodness of family. Rated PG-13. Watch on Netflix. |
