One of my favorite trends in contemporary Christian music is a growing retrieval of classic hymns—revisiting the musically rich, theologically deep songs of the church from centuries past.

Christian hymnody is such a treasure trove of inspiration for today’s young artists. At a time when so much in pop culture feels cheap, disposable, and forgettable, the enduring hymns of the faith feel meaty and substantial. Covering old hymns also allows artists to tap into a significant musical heritage and vocabulary shared by Christians across the globe.

Every year we see more and more contemporary artists releasing great covers of classic hymns. That’s why I decided to curate a new playlist that brings together some of the best “old hymns made new.” On the playlist you’ll find artists of different styles, from different parts of the world, offering their fresh takes on beloved hymns by Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley, Fanny Crosby, and more.

I’ve already made this playlist a staple of my listening life. It reliably stirs my affections for God and grounds me in the comforting truths of Scripture. I hope it will do the same for you.
