| Bluey is probably not the kind of show I would have been aware of, let alone watched, five years ago. But five years ago I had no children. And today, I have three. To say children’s entertainment is now on my radar would be an understatement. I’m always on the hunt for quality shows for my kids to watch—not just shows that are “safe,” but shows that are good, true, and beautiful. Enter Bluey. The Australian show, which can be viewed in the U.S. on Disney+, is high quality on every measure: great animation, great storytelling, great incorporation of music (Bach! Mozart! Holst!). But arguably the best thing Bluey has going for it is that it actually presents a positive, compelling, largely traditional portrait of the nuclear family. It celebrates the beauty of family. It models how, when each member of a family unit serves the others, the whole family thrives. I don’t typically write in-depth reviews of animated kids shows, but with Bluey, I couldn’t resist. At a time when even the most seemingly innocent children’s entertainment is being infused with problematic agendas, Christian parents should celebrate the existence of shows like Bluey. |
