| I’m a dad of three kids under the age of six. My wife and I both work full time. Needless to say, we’re frequently exhausted. The temptation is often strong to set the kids up with a show on Netflix or Paramount+ while we make a meal, clean up after a meal, fold laundry, pay bills, or do whatever else needs to be done. There are a few “go to” shows we tend to feel fine about turning on for the kids. But what happens when—a few seasons in—one of these seemingly wholesome options (e.g. Peppa Pig or CoComelon) starts to present narratives with questionable values? How do parents become aware when this happens? And how do you talk to your kids when you’re forced to say “no” to a show or YouTube channel you previously said was OK? These are some of the questions I explore in my new article, “Vetting Kids’ Entertainment Isn’t a One-and-Done.” It’s a piece I wrote very much for myself too. I need help and wisdom on parenting little ones in today’s media environment as much as any other Christian parent. If you’re a fellow parent I hope my tips here are helpful, and I hope together we can help each other stay alert to streaming media’s ever-changing landscape and always-growing array of options. |
