A NOTE FROM MELISSA & COURTNEY

Last month, I (Melissa) had the opportunity to take my daughter on a special trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. She was born there almost 25 years ago but hadn’t returned since she was nine months old. It was a delight to take her back and show her the places she had been but didn’t remember.

Before we left, I pulled out old pictures to show her: in her high chair at our little flat, in her pram at the gardens, in my arms by the castle. As I showed her the pictures of how little she was (with cheeks that were so big!), my eyes also drifted to the images of me. Twenty-five years have brought many changes: new wrinkles(even my knees have wrinkles at this point), new aches, new shifts in weight. While I could delight in the natural changes in my daughter’s body as she grew from a 9-month-old to a 25-year-old, I found it more difficult to accept the changes in my own body.

That’s why I was so grateful that Courtney and I had just recorded a Deep Dish episode with our friend Lisa Whittle to discuss stewardship of our bodies. Recently, Lisa published a Bible study on this topic, and she shared how digging deep into Scripture reshaped the way she views her body. It’s an honest conversation about learning to think biblically about how we see and care for the bodies God has given us.

We hope you’ll enjoy this episode!

Discussion Questions
  1. In what ways are you tempted to measure your worth (or the worth of others) by physical appearance or ability?
  2. Describe one way you would like to have a healthier relationship with your body. What might need to change for that to happen?
  3. Share a time when you felt physically limited. How can experiences of frailty or weakness give us opportunities to glorify God?
  4. In what ways does Jesus’ own experience of physical weakness (hunger, fatigue, suffering, death) comfort or challenge you in your view of the body?
  5. How do you discern whether pursuing improved form and function is healthy or problematic?
  6. What would it look like for you to pursue health and strength with a “glory mentality” rather than a self-focused one?
  7. How does the reality of spending eternity in a glorified version of your body influence the way you view and care for your body now?

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

My husband and I do the New York Times crossword together every Sunday night after evening worship, and we frequently call on our teen sons for help in their areas of expertise. It’s a fun challenge that makes me feel both smart and totally clueless.

A friend of mine wrote this song, and upon first hearing it, it became my favorite! Based on Psalm 137, this song fully captures the cry of my heart most days. I long for Christ’s return! We Need No Harps by Hey Barnabas!

Our family loves games, but with my youngest not yet reading it’s hard to find one that is both fun and age-appropriate for the whole crew. Enter Flip 7! It’s simple to learn and fun to play, and we get a glimpse of everyone’s personalities as they decide whether or not to play the odds to get a higher score.

TGC Southeast Europe has recently been able to provide biblical training for two sets of young pastors. The first, a group from Croatia, has been receiving bi-weekly training sessions which are recorded and shared with the second set of pastors, a group of seven men who fled persecution in Myanmar. The pastors from Myanmar reached out to TGC for resources and have expressed deep gratitude to their Croatian brothers who graciously agreed to record and send their training sessions. Please pray for the ongoing growth and protection of these young pastors.
