It can be hard to know how to respond well when others confess their sin to us. Most of us are tempted to silently judge, quickly reassure, or simply quietly withdraw from that person. But Sharonda Cooper shows us a better way: “When someone wanders and commits grievous sin but repents and turns back to God and the church, we have an opportunity to demonstrate the gospel’s depth by drawing the repentant sinner closer and holding more tightly than we ever did before.” As she explains, “We mustn’t leave people alone in their struggle for holiness. By receiving back a repentant sinner, we tangibly demonstrate the gospel and reflect Christ’s heart.” In other words, we are to respond like Jesus—full of grace, mercy, compassion, and truth.
