| As my husband and I look forward to the birth of our first child in a few months, I’m rapidly becoming aware of how dangerous our apartment is. The free-standing bookcases lining our walls, none of which is anchored to the wall, now seem like looming towers of death. Of course, bookcases can be secured. But what about all those less obvious hazards that lurk in the pages of children’s books, videos, and classrooms? My parents’ generation worried about secret occult messages in cartoons. I’m worried about the expressive individualism overtly taught in picture books before the poor little tykes have even had a chance to learn the ABCs. For this reason, I was grateful for the sane perspective Matt Fuller models in “How to Raise Children in a ‘Be Yourself’ World.” Fuller’s outlook on the parenting landscape is sober but hopeful. Today’s world may be changing all the time, but the responsibilities of Christian parents—and Christians in general—are the same they have always been. Whether or not you have children or plan to, I hope you’ll read it and be encouraged. |
