| Last week we saw a remarkable display of courtroom forgiveness from the brother of Botham Jean, killed in his own apartment by Amber Guyer. The hug seen around the world between Brandt Jean and Guyer inspired millions even as many others cautioned against overlooking justice when celebrating forgiveness. Our most painful sins and suffering probably won’t play out in a televised trial. But every day we confront those we’ve sinned against and those who’ve sinned against us. How do we know when we’re truly sorry, and when we must forgive? The Bible helps us by distinguishing between godly grief and worldly grief. Anyone can be sorry to get caught. Not everyone actually repents. Paul teaches us in 2 Corinthians 7:10 that “godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” If you’ve been caught in sin—or if you’re wondering how and when to forgive—you’ll find much wisdom in Jennifer Greenberg’s “8 Signs of True Repentance.” She’ll help you distinguish between the grief that gives life and the grief that produces death. |
