Sometimes my friend wonders if he has the wrong job.

He doesn’t mind what he does, but it hasn’t ever “sparked joy.” He does his tasks on time and with excellence, but there’s not much thrill or deep meaning in his day-to-day. He’s had to learn to pray through his days, seeking God’s strength and leading when the paperwork is boring and the chatter from colleagues is disheartening.

So I resonated with Gaye Clark’s story in “God Can Redeem a Bad Job Choice.” I love the way God gave her the job she asked for, even though it turned out to be a bad fit. And I love how he led her to another one. Most of all, I love how she connected with, encouraged, and learned from another colleague during the time she was in the “wrong” spot. Even there, through days that felt endless and grating, God was working in both women.

God’s sovereignty doesn’t mean we can’t choose the wrong job—we can. But it does mean that none of our time spent there—or anywhere—is wasted.
