| The secular West lives, in many ways, on the fumes of Christianity. From love to justice to universal human rights, many of our culture’s most treasured values have Christian roots. And yet, as Collin Hansen observes, Christians today are more likely to be associated with the Westboro Baptist Church than the jewels of Western civilization. Though there is useful apologetic value in pointing out the Christian roots of our cherished values, Hansen helpfully reminds us “how the West was really won—not mostly through arguments but through love in close-knit community.” Indeed, everyday, ordinary neighbor-love is both the answer to the Westboro Baptist association and the root of cultural renewal in the West. In the midst of challenging cultural headwinds, let us look to our Savior in confident hope and walk humbly in his ways. |
