The other day in our TGC Slack channel, the subject of Giving Tuesday came up. One of my colleagues wrote, “this is my FAVORITE DAY OF THE YEAR!”

I laughed, because she has a healthy theology of giving, so of course it is. As for me, I was facing Giving Tuesday with mild dread. It’s not because I don’t like giving. I do. It’s because I feel overwhelmed by the hundreds of solicitations to support worthy causes.

I can’t support them all. I can’t even support a fraction of them. I feel guilty about that, and then I feel irritated because I don’t like to feel guilty. Then I feel defensive because, good grief, I can’t help everyone in the whole world all by myself.

But here’s the thing—nobody is asking me to single handedly care for all the needs in the world. Instead, God just asks me to be faithful and generous with the resources he’s given me (Matt. 25:14–30).

So this year, my husband and I will sit down together, praising God for our financial resources and looking for intentional ways we can give. And we’ll start with wise and practical advice from Bob and Leslie Doll, “for the honor and glory of his great name, for our good, and for the good of perhaps countless others.”
