This was the year AI got the world’s attention. ChatGPT and other generative AI programs are still in their infancy but are already uncanny in their abilities to mimic human reason and creativity. And if AI is already this impressive in the “dial up” early days of the technology, what will it be like in 20 years? We can’t even imagine.

Certainly in the future (and even now, more than you realize), the emails you receive will often be written by robots. I bet more than a few #GivingTuesday emails you’ve received today were AI-generated. But rest assured, the email you’re reading now was written by a human, and the articles you read at The Gospel Coalition are written by humans.

Perhaps one day robots will write better emails and articles than me. But they won’t be able to care for the readers of those emails and articles in the way I do. AI will no doubt perform content-creation tasks dutifully and efficiently, but they won’t do it like me: with a heart-level passion to glorify Christ, strengthen his church, and advance his mission.

What we create for you at TGC—articles, videos, podcasts, playlists—isn’t just impersonal content. It’s the product of personal conviction. My TGC colleagues write and edit articles drawing from their real, on-the-ground, hands-in-the-dirt plodding in pursuit of Christ and within the church. The resources we create aren’t algorithmically optimized answers to questions the internet is asking. They’re what we know you need because we need them too—and so do the people in our churches, families, workplaces, and neighborhoods. We do this out of love: human, messy, nonartificial love. And I hope that matters.

My latest review is one example. Like much of what we write and edit for TGC, this one originated in my own life, with real people in mind whom I know, love, and want to serve. Behind the article’s words aren’t just zeroes and ones but real, embodied Gen Z singles who sit across the table from me often. And behind the words is also me: a lucky husband to Kira and father of three sweet children, a man whose joy in marriage and fatherhood is a gift I want my younger brothers in the faith to have as well. And so I write things like this for them, and others like them, as a small act of love to steer them—I hope and pray—toward solid, life-giving truth.
