As I watched the Super Bowl with family and friends, I began to wonder if we were gathered as football fans or commercial critics. The effective ads made us laugh, while others struck our group as a colossal waste of money. But two left us scratching our heads—the “He Gets Us” commercials.

“Wait. Were those commercials about Jesus?” someone asked. “Who sponsored them?” considered another.

I pulled out my phone to investigate but ended up with more questions than answers. So, I was intrigued by Joe Carter’s recent FAQ article on the “He Gets Us” campaign. He addresses basic questions about the people and purpose behind the campaign and also engages some of the campaign’s common critiques. Does it promote a wrong view of Jesus? Is it an effective evangelism strategy? Does it exhibit good stewardship?

I appreciate Carter’s efforts to demystify the commercials, but I’m most grateful for how he encourages us to think about the people behind them. “Wherever we land on those questions,” he writes, “we should judge the campaign fairly and graciously. However flawed some may regard their approach, the campaign is composed of orthodox evangelical believers who are attempting to point people to Jesus.”

We won’t always agree with the strategies and methods of our brothers and sisters. But all who are in Christ are on the same team. And as Jesus explained in John 13:35, we will point people to him if we have love for one another.
