| In the weeks since returning home from The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference, I’ve continued studying the book of James with women at my local church. One question God is asking me through his Word is how do I care for those in need? Asking God to open our eyes to the needs of others is costly. Yet, it’s what God asks of us. And he doesn’t ask something he himself isn’t willing to give. After all, Jesus made the greatest sacrifice for us. Who is the widow in your church who needs a friend? Which family is unable to pay their mortgage or rent? How can you help your neighbor who is struggling for her life in the hospital? In this month’s featured article, Kathryn Butler reminds us: long periods of sickness can pull people from spiritual disciplines in a time when they desperately need to be reminded of God’s truth. As the body of Christ, we’re “uniquely poised to help in such moments.” Butler offers five ways we can love the sick, ultimately reminding them (or perhaps telling them for the first time) of our great hope in Jesus. Her suggestions can help us care not only for the sick but for the various needs of those around us. Father, open our eyes and grant us your wisdom in how to respond, for the glory of your name.
