| Recently, I’ve passed many days in a groggy state of sleep deprivation. Even as I write this letter, I’m 37 weeks pregnant and recovering from a nasty cough, neither of which lend themselves to restorative sleep. Without fail, exhaustion shows me how desperately I need the help of the Holy Spirit. Patience is one of the first things to run out, and I see my sinful tendencies to speak a harsh word or grumble about my circumstances. While I’d like to blame my impatience on my lack of sleep, the truth is, sleep isn’t a requirement for patience. God is so kind to use these days to remind me that whether I’ve slept eight hours or 45 minutes, the Spirit can bear the fruit of patience in me. In her article, “Why We Can Be Patient When Sleep Deprived,” Rachel Mcintosh writes, “It is harder to be patient when we’re exhausted…But our ability to be patient isn’t dependent on sufficient sleep. When we’re in a season of little sleep, we can keep asking the Lord to give us more. But let’s not believe the lie that sin is inevitable in the meantime.” You may be weary or exhausted today too. Maybe your circumstances look like mine, or maybe it’s grief, chronic pain, or racing thoughts that keep you up at night. Whatever you’re experiencing, hear this encouragement: if you’re in Christ, even sleep deprivation doesn’t render you powerless against sin. The Lord is able to give you everything you need, even in your weakest moments. And when you fail, take comfort in the knowledge that you are united to the One who endured sleeplessness, exhaustion, and weakness, yet never once sinned. He is your salvation and your help. |
