One Saturday in early March, I made my weekly trip to the public library. After quickly scanning the shelves, I left with two mystery novels and a new cookbook. I didn’t know I wouldn’t be back for a long time. A few days later, my library (and everything else) shut down, and I was suddenly sheltering in place with a very short stack of very casually-chosen books.

I finished both novels within days and then flipped through the cookbook for a few weeks. The books were fine, but they weren’t meant to sustain my soul through the fear, loneliness, disappointment, and anger of the past months. For that, I needed a better stack of books.

Thankfully, this has been a busy season for new books by Christian women. Melissa Kruger wrote Growing Together, a book about mentoring (TGC’s review is this month’s featured article), Jasmine Holmes explores race and identity in Mother to Son (our podcast interview), Jen Oshman addresses self-focus in Enough About Me (our review), and I wrote A Place to Belong, a book about loving the local church (an excerpt.)
