Ministry Lessons from a Fried Egg

20120301-074706.jpg

This past Christmas my daughters got me a single egg pan to help me with my breakfast. Knowing how I love to eat eggs for breakfast and occasionally burn them, they figured this pan which boasted “The Perfect Egg” would be an ideal gift. They were right.

Multiple times a week I opt for this hot breakfast and marvel at how, well, perfect the eggs turn out.

I also learn a valuable ministry lesson: patience and trust.

The issue is that I am impatient with the eggs; I want them right away. It seems like they have been on there too long and I rush to remove them. The problem is that they aren’t done. And thus they are less than perfect.

This reminds me of ministry and my need to wait patiently upon that which God advertises as perfect. He says that his people are to be sanctified with and in the Word (Jn. 17.17, Ep. 5.26-27, 2 Tm. 3.16-17). Sometimes this takes a little longer than I would like. But at the end of the day I have to trust the one who faithfully promises to work in and through his appointed means and according to his appointed timing. This is good for me to remember. I trust it is good for you also.
