Do you remember when God at first opened your eyes to believe and behold his glory and the reality of forgiveness in Christ? Do you recall the joy that filled your heart? If you are a Christian then no doubt you know the point in which your belief was embossed with a heavenly marvel. Was that not the greatest hour of your life?
Does that joy, excitement, and marvelous praise describe your current posture?
The 126th Psalm was penned to remind hearts of such joy. The writer reminds himself and the congregation of the faithful of how those who were so divinely awestruck and enraptured with such gracious befuddlement when they were redeemed from captivity:
Psalm 126:1-3 When the LORD brought back the captive ones of Zion, We were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter And our tongue with joyful shouting; Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” 3 The LORD has done great things for us; We are glad.
Do you see these words that characterize the realization of divine grace? It was as if they were living a dream, their mouths were full of laughter and their tongues filled with joyful shouting!
Not only this but they went about the nations proclaiming the greatness of God in his redemption, saying: “The LORD has done great things for us, we are glad” (v.3).
How much more Christian should you be filled with this thankful laughter, joy, gladness, and shouting? Even to have evangelism fueled by these gracious acts of grace. For we have not been merely brought out of a land of slavery or a country of captivity, but if you are in Jesus Christ you have been redeemed from the shackles and penalty of sin! You have been rescued from the due wages of your rebellion by the gracious Prince Emmanuel! We who are in Christ have not just received an earthly release but a heavenly one! Therefore our joy should dwarf those who have experienced such a blessing.
Resolve today to meditate on the infinite love, mercy, grace, and kindness of God in rescuing you from the bondage of sin and giving you Jesus, the blessed Savior.
