My Philosophy of Purchasing Books on a Limited Budget

When I first started reading books I wanted to buy everything that came out.  A lot of times this included many of the ‘controversial’ books dealing with various trends within and without evangelicalism.  After a short time I realized that it was best for me to stock my shelves with that which is most helpful to me both today and throughout my life.  In other words I needed something with staying power.

I realized pretty quickly that my commentary section was severely understocked.  It makes would make sense that the most helpful books are going to be those that help you to understand the text.  This would obviously apply if you are going to be dealing with ad-hoc issues such as fads   The text then helps you to understand the various issues.

So with a limited budget and a ever growing appetite for good, helpful books I have decided over the last 24-36 months to stock up on good commentaries on the Old and New Testament, theological works from dead guys that help me to be more impressed with Christ, solid Reformed Systematics, contemporary guys that help me communicate the greatness of Christ better, and biographies of people who have done so.  I am pleased to see my commentary section increase as it is flanked by Spurgeon’s sermons, the Works of Edwards and Owen, Systematic Theologies, and various biographies of saints.

This is not to discount the need to be current on issues, this is obviously important.  However, in terms of the priority, for me, I need to work on my own heart, my love for Christ.  I simply haven’t found anyone that can do this better than dead guys with outstanding hair and modern biblical commentators.  This is what I need.

I think this is a prudent long term approach for guys who want to dig a deep well, have their hearts stirred, serve Christ’s church, and wisely use their money.

I’d be curious to hear what you do in terms of purchasing books.
