I am enjoying the opportunity to preach a two week stint on Sunday morning here at Omaha Bible Church. We are working through John chapter 6. One of the things that jumped out at me in studying was the reaction of the confessionally religious to theological truth (John 6.41). In the midst of Jesus uncorking a vintage bottle of Christological truth the professing followers begin to “grumble”. All Jesus did was talk about Divine Sovereignty, human depravity, his own exclusivity, sufficiency and supremacy.

Sadly this brand of Jesus is still too often resisted. Many religious folks treat the theology of Jesus like sushi, they have heard of it, don’t like it, and want to get away from it as fast as possible. How many times have you engaged in a conversation with a professing Christian and talked about the sovereignty of God and inability of man to come to Christ only to be rebuffed with that infamous blank stare or worse the patented exhale and disinterested look away? Or worse, many times folks will just grumble and ask “Why are you so wrapped up in theology?” “Is this all you talk about?”

You should not have to raise your voice when talking to Christians about Jesus in order to drown out their grumbling. You should not have to convince them of the value of knowing, studying, and loving Jesus; this is what the Holy Spirit does when he invades the hard heart and regenerates it to behold and believe in the Son.

So keep talking about the greatness and glory of the Son, He likes it. And in so doing, you will flush out the phony and the genuine convert, just like Jesus did (John 6.60-71).
