“but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” (Mark 14.21)
What Judas does with his life is the worst thing he could do with it. It cancels out all of the joy, happiness, blessing, and other experiences. His betrayal of Christ is the ultimate evil.
Why is this?
It is because Jesus is the ultimate good. By virtue of who he is (good) and what he does (good) he, as Psalm 119.68 says, “you are good and do good.”
But, Judas is not the only one to betray Jesus. In due time, we see multiple disciples scatter and run. Peter will deny him 3 times before morning.
Failing to respond properly to the majesty of Christ is to betray him. To pervert the relationship between God and man is to betray him through treason.
Therefore, in principle, we can all relate to Judas. His heart’s desires and actions are not anomalies for humanity but rather, representative of who we are.
To reject Christ, to deem him unworthy of your love, devotion and worship is to devalue him. That is exactly what Judas did.
What he did was the worst thing he could do.
What do you think is the worst thing you could do?
In light of the fact that it is the glory of God that God ultimately values and that God is most glorified through the worship of his Son, then you would have to say that a belittling, devaluing, and betraying Jesus is the worst thing that you and I could do.
I would imagine that some of us would struggle with this. I know I do. However, if you think in terms of impact, that is upon God and upon your own soul. There is nothing of greater importance, nothing is more weighty and more consequential than what you do with Jesus.
To worship him is the best thing that you could do and to betray him is the worst thing you could do.
