“Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?” 1 Samuel 19:5
David had given Saul no reason to hate him. Saul just felt this rage deep inside himself. His hostility revealed his own deepest heart.
The word translated “without cause” in the ESV is the Hebrew word for “grace,” here in an adverbial form. We have given God no reason to love us. He just feels this mercy deep inside himself. His love reveals his own deepest heart.
God doesn’t need us to give him reasons to love us today. He loves us “without cause,” in terms of what we deserve, to the praise of the glory of his grace.
