He said, “It is finished” John 19:30

Lord Jesus, on this 2020 Labor Day, we are grateful for your perfect and complete “labor of love.” Everything changed when you cried out from the cross, “It is finished!” That’s one job that’s completely and forever over. Hallelujah!

As our substitute in life, you fulfilled all the demands of God’s Law for us. In one sense we are saved by works—yours, not ours. And as our substitute in death, you exhausted the judgment we deserve.

By your resurrection we are now counted guiltless and righteous. We’re fully known and greatly enjoyed; seated in the heavenlies and rooted in love; standing in grace and sealed for eternity. The peace this brings us is incalculable, Jesus.

Performance-based-spirituality has taken an eternal beat-down. Legalism and pragmatism have been exposed and dethroned. Our labors for you have become labors of love. We’re not working to get crowns for ourselves, but to throw crowns at your feet.

Now we engage in our vocations as stewards of calling, not servants of money; not to build a fiefdom for ourselves, but for the good of our neighbors. Until you return, work will still have thorns and weeds, but we’re grateful to be participating in your commitment to make all things new.

Jesus, thank you for redeeming us, work, and everything. We pray for your sure and soon return. So very Amen we pray, in your merciful and mighty name.
