A Prayer About Lavished Love
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1
Heavenly Father, the more I read and meditate on your Word the more I’m experiencing a most glorious warfare. These great declarations of your love are mounting an all-out assault against the garish dimensions of my unbelief.
I really don’t want to put up a fight. In fact, I so wish I could just put up a huge white flag of surrender and be done with my unbelief once and for all. I so look forward to the Day when I no longer have to pray, “I believe, help my unbelief.” But today, this one day, may the heavy artillery of the gospel make headway in my heart-ways.
You tell me you love me with lavish love. “Lavish”… what an odd word… and yet what a most wonderful word, for it conveys images of an overwhelming downpour, a profuse deluge… even an untamable spendthrift. Indeed Father, I am stunned when I really consider what an “untamable spendthrift” you are towards me, and all of your children, in the gospel, for you have been over-the-top generous-not miserly, not begrudgingly, not penny-pinching-ly… but lavishly gladly generous. Here I go again, “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.”
And Father… I’m so thankful for the “ed” on the end of the word “lavish.” I’m so thankful that the redemptive waterfall of your love for us in Jesus is not simply a promise for the future, but a settled state in which we now live. We live in the fullness of your favor because Jesus took the fullness of our judgment on the cross, once and for all. Because of what Jesus has done for us, you cannot love us more than you do today and will not love us less! Here I go again, “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.” So very Amen, I pray, in Jesus name.
