A Prayer about the Victorious Christ, (not the “Victorious Christian Life”

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 2 Cor. 2:14

Dear Lord Jesus, we greet and praise you this day as our victorious and reigning King. None is as lovely or loving as you. You completely save those who come to you in faith; and the very faith we need for coming to you, you freely give us in the gospel. None is as generous and faithful as you. You are the great warrior of our hearts—overthrowing the reign of sin by the reign of grace. None is as merciful and mighty as you.

Today we gladly take our place in the triumphant procession of your kingdom rule. We humbly assume the posture of both the conquered and the conquerors; for you triumphed over us that you might triumph through us. We praise you for rescuing us from the dominion of darkness—a kingdom in which we were willing citizens, co-conspirators and deceived slaves. Only the gospel was powerful enough to tear down our defenses and set us free.

And now you’ve commissioned us to live as a people through whom the fragrance of the gospel is released everywhere you lead us and place us—the healing aroma of forgiveness and freedom; the transforming incense of reconciliation and restoration; the kingdom cologne of your presence and glory. Who is sufficient for such an honor and calling?

Forgive us when we demonstrate a greater preoccupation with the “victorious Christian life,” than with you, the victorious Christ. You are our loving Lord, not our private masseuse; our gracious Master, not our maître D; our coming King, not our bottled genie.

Forgive us when our prayers reflect a greater commitment to our comfort than to your kingdom. Free us from “claiming” things you never promised. Give us a greater joy in serving you, and, indeed, in suffering with you. Wherever you lead us in your triumphant procession is the best place to be. However you spread the fragrance of knowing you is the best way to live. So very Amen we humbly pray, in your name and for your glory.
