A Prayer About Wonder
As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.
Mark 9:15
Most glorious Lord Jesus, I know that you’ve made me for wonder, but I am so prone to wander-so easily distracted and attracted to far lesser luminaries than yourself. That’s what makes this scene in Mark’s gospel jump out at me. A gathering of people saw you coming, and overwhelmed with wonder, they ran to welcome you. They ran, they didn’t meander. They ran, they didn’t doddle. They ran to you, not from you! And you welcomed them…
That’s what I want in this season and every season of life, Jesus-to see you more clearly with faith-filled eyes that I might run to you more quickly with an awe-filled heart. I know that will be my joy forever, for Paul described your return as the Day on which you will be “marveled at among all those who have believed” (2 Thess. 1:10). Indeed, you are a marvelous Savior, Jesus.
The only reason I have any inclination to run to you is because, in the gospel, you’re always running me to-hurrying to be merciful, speedy to be grace-full, so quick to be gentle, kind, and forgiving. What a foolish man I am to look anywhere else for beauty and balm.
So heavenly Father, the song which fills my heart this day is “Open the eyes of my heart Lord, open the eyes of my heart, I want to see Jesus, I want to see Jesus…”. Holy Spirit, I know it is your utter delight to answer such a cry. Indeed, so be to me the “Spirit of wisdom and revelation” so that I might know Jesus better (Eph. 1:17). So very Amen, I pray, with thirst and anticipation.
