A Prayer of Praise for Everything that God Is to Us and for Us

There is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. 1 Cor. 8:6

Dear heavenly Father, this small portion of Scripture frees my heart today, for walking with you and giving you the worship of which you alone are worthy. Since eternal life is knowing you and your Son, Jesus (John 17:3), I would do well to linger in this one verse—mining its inexhaustible riches. Thank you for being such an augustly glorious and gracious God.

Truly, there is no other God but you—full of mercy, grace and kindness; for you have chosen to relate to us as the Father from whom all fatherhood derives its meaning (Eph. 3:14-15). You’re not simply the best father there ever was; you are the quintessential Father. Everything comes from you—everything: my first breath and my next, my first heartbeat and my last. There’s nothing that I have that I didn’t receive from you (1 Cor. 4:7)—every creature comfort and all the exquisite riches of the gospel.

And Lord Jesus, you are the King of kings and Lord of lords—peerless and rival-less. You are the Christ—the promised Redeemer and loving Bridegroom. Through you, the Father created the world, secured our salvation, sustains all things, and will complete his great story of redemption and restoration. What a wonderful, merciful Savior you are.

By you, I “live, move and have my being,” (Acts 17:28), and apart from you, I can do nothing. Autonomy is a pernicious myth and self-salvation a demonic lie. I am most alive when I’m most alive to you. Hallelujah, you became for us our  ”wisdom from God—our righteousness, sanctification and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30-31).

And God the Holy Spirit, I see, understand, and believe these things only because of your powerful and persistent work in my heart. Though you are the “quietest” member of the Godhead, none is more active or present. Oh, the peace, love, and joy that you bring to our hearts. So very Amen I pray, in Jesus’ exalted name, to the glory of the Triune God.
