“I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus… for they refreshed my spirit.” (1 Cor. 16:17-18); The Lord… “restores, refreshes, renews my soul” (Psalm 23:3)
Lord Jesus, I’m sure I’ve read their names many times, but this is the first time I’ve noticed just how much they meant to the Apostle Paul. “I was glad to see them come through the door, for they refreshed my spirit.” All of us “get” that image. We can think of certain people we love to see coming. For they have a “knack,” way, habit, and heart for bringing encouragement and refreshment.
In a world, and long season, of depleted spirits, crushed spirits, weary spirits—thank you for those who refresh our spirits, Jesus. Not by weight of personality, empty flattery, or baseless promises—but through the power of kindness, empathy, care, and your grace… we’re glad when they “show up,” and sad when they drive off.
Make US those kinds of friends, co-workers, and neighbors, Lord. For you are the source and spring of the sweetest, most needed refreshment. “Flickering wicks and crushed reeds” love it when you show up. You are near and dear to the brokenhearted, weary, and heavily burdened. Nobody feels they need to tidy the desk, pretend happiness, or feign “okay-ness” when you come through the door. Thank you Lord Jesus. Thank you. Be all of that to us, and through us. So Very Amen.
