“The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength enough to save a warrior. Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—for all its strength, it cannot save you. But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. Ps. 33:16-18

Lord Jesus, though we avoid it like the plague, it’s good to come to the end of ourselves and our ropes. To be in situations where our resources and strength, wisdom and cunning, magic and mojo aren’t enough.

For that’s when we abandon ourselves to the God who parted the Red Sea (Ex. 14). Overthrew the Midianite army with 300 gun-less soldiers (Judges 7). Took down Goliath with a pebble (1 Sam. 17). Raised a dead man (you, Jesus) for the salvation of his people and the transformation of the cosmos (1 Cor. 15).

By your finished work, we now live in the permanent favor, über-delight, and endless supply of God’s unfailing love. Indeed, we can know and fully rely on the God of love, and the love of our God (1 John 4:7-21).

No other kindness and affection are sufficient for our ache and emptiness. No other strength is powerful enough for our weakness. No other balm even begins to touch our pain. No other peace can calm our fears. No other hope guarantees us citizenship in heaven and grace for today.

Jesus, we bring our lack to your riches, our cluelessness to your wisdom, our anxieties to your welcome, our worries to your faithfulness, our anger to your compassion, our shame to your grace. We bring it all to you, Jesus. We bring you ourselves on this March Thursday. So Very Amen.
