Anchored

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:19 My dad knows all about anchors. He quit high school when he was 17, lied about his age and joined the Navy where his passion for ships was born. After his first season on the sea he took the GED in LA and was accepted into the Merchant Marine Academy, from which he graduated as a navigator. Over the course of the next several years he guided ships into 60 different countries, armed with a sextant in hand to read the stars and plot the course of huge vessels. Many, many times Dad depended on anchors to hold his ships in place, firmly and securely.

I don’t know squat about boats. But, thankfully, I’ve learned a bit about the “anchor of hope” the writer of Hebrews encouraged us to ponder. Hope is no mere fingers-crossed wishing or hype-filled guessing. Hope is the guarantee that things are going to work out because God raised Jesus from the dead. And when God raised Jesus from the dead the promised future of all things new invaded this world of all things broken.

Hope is not presumption that I’m going to get my way or everything is going to be easy. Hope is a powerful present certainty that God does all things well. As my head spins, my heart races and my feet run, in anticipation of getting Dad in the car to move to Nashville Friday morning, I’m anchored to hope and by hope. I cannot wait to see what God is going to do to bring much glory to himself, and to make me a whole lot more like Jesus. Now, what about you? Are you relying on the right anchor? Don’t settle for hype when hope is yours in Jesus. And, by the way, I so covet your prayers!
