“The Lord is on my side, so I won’t let fear dominate my heart. What can mere people do to me? The Lord’s on my side as my ‘helper.’ Those who hate me won’t prevail. You are worthy as our refuge and worthy of our trust in ways people and princes never could be.” (Paraphrase of Psalm 118:6–9)
Lord Jesus, though I’m yawning my way into your presence this morning, you are fully alert and engaged. What a Savior you are—never sleeping or slumbering. You never need an afternoon break or summer vacation. You’re never moody or bored with us. You’ll never wish for better sheep to take to all the green pastures at your disposal. Hallelujah, and thank you.
Jesus, it’s because your love is so unwavering that you are easy to trust. Only you can be fully trusted—at least until we’re glorified and enjoying life in the new heaven and new earth. As broken people we fail one another, and the Gospel doesn’t make us immune to the pain of stressed, fractured, or full-bore broken trust. Some of my praying friends are beginning this week with hearts throbbing with this very pain. Be close. Be gracious. Be our healer.
Broken agreements and confidences, broken promises and broken contracts hurt, no matter who they come from. Humble us, Jesus, for this works both ways. At different times in various ways, we are all “breakers” not just “break-ees.” Have mercy on all of us, Jesus; and extend your mercy through us.
The Psalmist asked, “What can man do to me?” (Ps.118:6). A lot, Jesus. But with you as our primary refuge and very present help—with you as our advocate, intercessor, redeeming Lord, we don’t have to grow angrier, flint-hard, or dangerously isolated.
Jesus, only you have never failed at your “Yes being 100% Yes,” and your “No being 100% Never.” Great is your faithfulness. Great is your love. Great are you, Lord. So Very Amen.
