“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Prov.11:24–25)
Lord Jesus, I cannot read these words without lifting my heart and hands toward heaven. I cannot read the four words “he who refreshes others” without thinking of you. For no one refreshes a dry and weary heart like you. Your mercies are new every morning, and your steadfast love never comes to an end. Receiving every care we cast is your specialty. You own our battles and never stop interceding for us. Great is your faithfulness—measureless your kindness.
You still call to us in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Artesian springs of grace and Spirit refreshment will well up inside you.” (John 7:37). Jesus, I join my brothers and sisters in coming to you right now with my heart as wide open as the Gospel enables. I humble myself before you. I own the need that you alone can meet. I am not ashamed to acknowledge how much I crave fresh heart renewal, more Gospel freedom, and a baptism of hope. In fact, I will be so bold as to ask for the aroma of the new heaven and new earth to waft in my direction. You love to give, Jesus, and I love to receive from you.
And as grace runs downhill to the needy, so it flows freely to others. To whom would you send us today—to whom would you send me? Freely we receive; freely we will give. As you are actively redeeming the nations and making all things new, so you also care for those all around us. Give us eyes to see what you see, Jesus. Bruised reeds and flickering candles are everywhere. So Very Amen.
