Lord, you poured out blessings on your land! You restored the fortunes of Israel. You forgave the guilt of your people—yes, you covered all their sins. You held back your fury. You kept back your blazing anger. Now restore us again, O God of our salvation. Psalm 85:1-4
Heavenly Father, you have an impeccable “track record” of rescuing, restoring, and renewing your people. The history of redemption is filled with episodes of your Spirit and grace at work among those who deserve the opposite. Therefore, we join the Psalmist in crying out, “Do it again, Lord.”
The unrest in our culture, country, and churches intersect as a perfect scenario for a heart-humbling, knee-bowing work of your Spirit. Like a pressure-cooker nearing its capacity, it feels like the USA is nearing an explosive outcome, no matter who wins the 2020 election.
We’d rather have an explosive work of your Spirit, than more destructive works of our flesh. There is no salvation in any political party, only in King Jesus and his Kingdom.
Father, make the good news of the Gospel, fresh news in our midst—the only news worth our attention. Show us so much of the glory and beauty of Jesus, the only possible response will be deep conviction of our sin, tear-laced lamenting of our arrogance, and total abandonment to your mercy and grace.
Rescue us from our chilled affections for Jesus, our us-versus-them obsession, and the ways we are either ignoring or politicizing the Gospel. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ glorious and triumphant name.
