Do I Celebrate a Savior or Crave a Fanbase?

Mary “will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matt.1:21) “Whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” (Luke 7:47)

Lord Jesus, I was thinking yesterday, if a hundred people overheard the angel’s assuring words to Joseph about your birth—how many of them would have been disappointed, indifferent, or even angry? The coming of a Messiah who saves people from their sins is only good news to those who crave salvation. If I think my biggest need in life is to be appreciated, celebrated, and esteemed, I’ll seek a fanbase who “get” me, not a Savior who’ll forgive me.

Lord have mercy on us all—Lord have mercy on me. Jesus, thank you, thank you, thank you for coming to save us from the ugly reality, death-dolling disease, self-exalting rebellion, and deserved penalty of our sin. We are helpless and powerless, but you are mighty to save and generous with your grace. Hallelujah!

As we gather with our families this weekend, we want to do so in the Spirit of the one about whom you said, “she loves much because she has been forgiven much” (Lk.7:47). Jesus, how is it possible for us to forget the 100% forgiveness you’ve already forgiven us? When did we lose our awe, astonishment, and gratitude for so great a salvation, and so loving a Savior as you?

Give us Gospel eyes and hearts, humility and kindness for everyone we’re with this weekend—those who annoy us, offend us, miss our hearts, and act like sinners needing grace. We want to “wash your feet with our tears” (Lk.7:38) more than we keep score of our disappointments. Jesus, you are SO loving, patient, and kind, and we are SO thankful. So Very Amen.
