I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.”

The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them. Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names of their gods. Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. Psalm 16:2-5 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, as I meditate on these words of King David, my simple response is simply, “Amen, and make it even more true.” You are my Master and Treasure. Thankfully you are my Master, not sin or death, whims or lusts, people’s opinions or wannabe-gods.

And what a kind and generous Master you are, Jesus. You created us for life in a garden paradise and redeemed us for an eternal life beyond our greatest imagining. Every good thing we have comes from you. Because you are the fountain of pleasure and the river of lasting delight; the wellspring of pure joy and the source of deepest satisfaction. You are the God from whom all blessings flow, not merely trickle.

You give cheerfully, not begrudgingly; you love lavishly, not reservedly; you redeem fully, not partially. In your time, and in your way, Jesus, you will make all things new, and all things beautiful. Rescue us from cliché-spirituality. Make these affirmations more real to us than the air we breathe and the sky above our heads.

Of all the inheritances my tempt-able, wandering heart might run after, Jesus, you alone are to be desired and treasured. Compared to you, all other gold is fool’s gold; all other currencies are counterfeit; all other riches are rubbish.

Because of your life, death, and resurrection, to live is to know you, and death is to gain more of you; boasting in weakness is freedom, and pretending is slavery; humility is the way up, and pride is the way down; hope is certain, and fears are falling. Hallelujah! So very Amen we pray, in your wonderful and merciful name.
