Hallelujah for God’s Memory and “Forgetfulness”

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the child she bore? Even mothers may forget, I will not forget you.” Isa.49:15

“I will not remember their sins and lawless acts against them.” Ps.79:8; Heb. 10:17

Mary praising God upon realizing she was pregnant with Jesus, the Messiah: “God remembered to be merciful, as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever” Luke 1:54

Heavenly Father, in the past 3 weeks, I’ve had the humbling joy of 2 different smiling couples in 2 different cities tell me how wonderfully they are doing. I had no clue who they were, until they reminded me I officiated their weddings—one 30 and the other 40 years ago. Abba, my memory isn’t what it used to be; but Hallelujah, yours never fades, is always fueled by grace, and is always a conduit of your great love for us.

Though we sometimes ignore you, forget the Gospel, and act like we have no memory of belonging to you… you never forget us. You always have us in the forefront of your heart and mind.

Among other things, this means you will never remember our sins and lawless acts against us. This doesn’t mean you have sin-amnesia, but grace-memory. You gave Jesus our sins, and you gave us his righteousness—what an exchange.

But that’s not all, gracious Father. Like Mary prayed, you also remember every promise you have made to us in the Scriptures. This makes our hearts dance and our knees buckle in worship, for you have promised never to leave us or forsake us. You have promised to work in all things for our good—no exceptions. You have promised to make all things new through Jesus, send him back in the perfect moment, and fill the entire earth with your glory. And there’s much more, but we simply say for now, Hallelujah, and So Very Amen.
