“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases” (Ps. 115:3). “Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish” (Isa. 46:9-10).
Heavenly Father, the truth contained in these two passages will either move us to consternation or adoration—to living with clenched fists or with raised hands—to having vexed spirits or peaceful hearts—to being tender or being terse.
We want control or satisfactory explanations; but you give us something far better—yourself. Grant us grace to understand more fully: Your absolute sovereignty isn’t a slap in the face of our freedom; it’s your embrace as our loving Father.
In our most Gospel-sane moments, we only want “whatever you wish”—whatever “pleases you.” Ultimately, whatever pleases you will enthrall, thrill, and over-please us. Either very soon, or on the Day of Jesus’ return, we will declare without reservation, “Our God has done all things well!” (Mark 7:37). We believe this, because of the riches of your grace we have already received in the Gospel.
Though we tense up, whine, and grumble… we really are glad you aren’t wistful—merely pining, wishing, and hoping things will work out. You don’t “try” to do anything, Father—as though your will is contingent on anything. You have planned in eternity that which happens century by century, year by year, minute by minute. What a profound mystery. It’s hard for us to fathom—and, at times, hard for us to accept. But we are glad it’s true. Hallelujah, and So Very Amen.
