How big, gracious, glorious is Jesus? “By him (Jesus) all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” Col. 1:16-17

Dear friends, before offering our daily prayer, I want to share a wonder-fueling quote from C.S. Lewis. In his book “The Last Battle,” Lewis calls us to enter Jesus’ manger scene in a fresh way. Three of Lewis’ characters bid us to go inside the Stable, and see for ourselves how “ginormous” Jesus and his incarnation really are.

“It seems, then,” said Tirian, smiling himself, “that the Stable seen from within and the Stable seen from without are two different places.” “Yes,” said the Lord Digory. “Its inside is bigger than its outside.” “Yes,” said Queen Lucy. “In our world too, a Stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our whole world.”

Lord Jesus, no matter how highly we think of you, your splendor and glory have no ceiling or end. No matter how deep we believe the ocean of your grace is, it is unfathomably more bottomless. No matter how astonished we are at your incarnation and work on our behalf, we have just begun to apprehend the inexhaustible wonder the Gospel.

Before you return to finish making all things new, Jesus, come “stable-ize” our hearts. For we are weary and weak, tired of hurting and hurting others, heartsick for you and homesick for the life of heaven. So Very Amen.
