“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.’” (John 11:25); “He placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.’” (Rev. 1:17-18)

Lord Jesus, I join friends in grieving fresh hurt, but also in trusting a much greater hope. Of late, it seems like I’ve received more death notices than engagement announcements. I don’t like the ratio.

Thank you for coming into our world to destroy death, Jesus. You’re already removed its sting—even eradicated it. But we crave the Day every semblance, smell, and sensation of death will be gone forever.

Because of the Gospel, we rest and rejoice in this good news. Death isn’t sovereign, you are. Sin didn’t triumph, you did. You are the grave robber and grace giver. You took our judgment, and gave us your righteousness. Hallelujah, many times over.

Your past resurrection is the guarantee of ours. Your current reign re-centers and settles us. Your impending return explains the inward groaning and eager waiting of our hearts. For we know, after our final Wedding, there will be no more “terminal illnesses,” death announcements, and funerals. We, your Bride, say, “Come soon!”

We mourn today, but will dance in the morning—and forever. Until you return, may we treasure friendship and family over portfolios and retirement plans. So very Amen we pray, in your tender and triumphant name.
