“One thing I do...” Paul, in Phil. 3:13

“One thing have I desired of the LORD…” King David, in Ps. 27:4

“One thing is necessary, and Mary chose it.” Jesus, Luke 10:42

Lord Jesus, mold, crabgrass, a bad attitude, clutter, unbelief—they all have this in common. Left unattended, they multiply. The promise “I’ll take care of that later,” morphs into much later. Before you know it, we’re overwhelmed.

“Going with the flow” isn’t a commitment to being unencumbered, free, and spontaneous. It’s a commitment to heart-drift, soul-shrinkage, chronic-discontent, and a critical spirit. Forgive us Lord, help us. We want to live as focused, intentional, loving “One-sies.”

Paul lived heavenward (Phil. 3:13). David craved your beauty (Ps. 27:4). Mary chose being with you over doing for you (Lk. 10:42). We want a healthy portion of all three.

Jesus, do a fresh work in our hearts, one that will lead us to say with childlike wonder and singular joy, “I consider all things rubbish compared to the surpassing excellency of knowing Jesus” (Phil. 3:7-10). “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.” (Psalm 73:25)

May our attitudes, schedules, and choices demonstrate our desire is for you, our delight is in you, and our days are lived with you. Jesus, we will never regret loving you more, and other stuff less. Life is too short to let the fear-sowers and joy-thieves win. So Very Amen.
