So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room available for them. Luke 2:4-7 NIV

Lord Jesus, no detail of your birth was left to chance, including having a stable for your birthing room. Nevertheless, the image of there being no room available to you strikes at my heart. How do I replay that inhospitable scene in my life? In what ways do I knowingly, and unknowingly, fail to make room for you, on a daily basis? How do I both ignore and avoid you—you who only will good and grace for us?

I hasten to praise you for making room for me in your heart, Lord Jesus. There is no greater hospitality than the gospel. I didn’t invite you into my heart; you gave me a new heart so I could know my need of you, find true hope in you, and receive great grace from you. Thank you… today and forever. My life is now hidden in yours, and your life in now growing in mine. Hallelujah!

So consciously, specifically, and expectantly I welcome you today. I welcome you into the chaos of my heart. Bring your centering peace. I welcome you into the things over which I have no control. Bring your reign of grace. I welcome you into my chilly heart. Bring the warming fire of your presence.

Jesus, I welcome you into my weaknesses and brokenness. Bring your beauty and strength. I welcome you into my fears and hopes. Bring your story-writing hand and heart. I welcome you into the place of my deepest longings and passions. Free me to love you, trust you, and serve you… with everything I have and am. So very Amen I pray, in your kind and welcoming name.
