She (Mary) gave birth to her firstborn, a son.
She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room available for them. Luke 2:4-7 NIV
Lord Jesus, no detail of your birth was left to chance, including a less than desirable birthing room. Nevertheless, the oft-highlighted image of there being “no room available” for you, deserves our reflection today.
Whether by busyness, inhospitality, or indifference, how do we replay that scene in our lives? In what ways do we knowingly, and unknowingly, fail to make room for you, Jesus? You made all things and fill the universe. How or why would we ever ignore or avoid you? You only intend to give us more mercy and grace, comfort and joy.
Thank you for making room for us in your heart, Jesus. There is no greater welcome or hospitality than what we experience in the gospel. Indeed, we didn’t invite you into our hearts, you gave us new hearts—hearts that know and worship you. Thank you, today and forever for your generosity. Our lives are now hidden in yours, and your life is now growing in ours.
Humbly and expectantly, we welcome you today, Jesus. We welcome you into the chaos of our hearts. Bring your centering peace. We welcome you into the things over which we have zero control. Bring your reign of grace. We welcome you into our busy, chilly hearts. Bring the warming fire of your presence.
Jesus, we welcome you into our weaknesses and brokenness. Bring your kindness and healing. We welcome you into our fears and hopes. Bring your story-writing hand and freedom-giving heart. We welcome you into the place of our deepest longings and unknown future. Free us to love, trust, and serve you. So very Amen we pray, in your kind and welcoming name.
