1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Dear heavenly Father, it almost sounds trite to refer to you as “good,” for you are quintessential, archetypal, unparalleled goodness. All goodness finds its source and meaning in you. Nothing can compare with the grandeur of your steadfast love for us in Jesus. Because of Jesus’ finished work, your love for us is immeasurable, unwavering, and inexhaustible. O what peace, joy, and freedom this gives us.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever.
You are the God of gods, because there is no God like you, and there is no God but you. There are only wannabe-gods and demigods, handmade idols and lifeless deities, empty nothings and broken cisterns. You are the thrice-holy God—eternal and glorious; and you love us more than we can possibly imagine or grasp.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever;
Father, what joy we have in knowing that Jesus is already King of kings and Lord of lords. He’s the ruler of the kings of the earth, and is sovereign over all things and all people, all our joys and all our sorrows, every cricket and every crisis. Nothing and no one can alter or resist his will, thrown Jesus off schedule, or cause consternation in the courts of heaven. O the security and peace we have in knowing the throne of heaven is occupied, and that your steadfast love endures forever.
4 to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever; 5 to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever
Indeed, things are not as they appear in our world—as crazy and out-of-control as things seem. You not only made the first heaven and earth, you’re also making all things new through Jesus (Rev. 21:1-5). In the new heaven and new earth, we will fully glorify you and enjoy you forever. That Day never looked so good, Father. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ strong and grace-full name.
