“The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 118:6); “We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers.” (Num. 13:33); “Fearing people is a dangerous trap” (Prov. 29:25)
Heavenly Father, thank you for another week to live with the assurance of your great love for us in Jesus. By the power of the Holy Spirit, make your love so palpably real to us, people will “shrink” to their proper size.
When “mere mortals” seem bigger than you, it impacts everything—how we see ourselves (like grasshoppers), spend our energy, and live each day. It determines our stress level and sleep quality—our peace, joy, and freedom.
Father, keep us from looking to anyone to fill us up, “complete us,” or validate our existence. Whether it’s a spouse or children, parents or friends, employer or employees. People are poor Abba-substitutes, and salvation-less saviors.
You’ve placed a Jesus-shaped void in our hearts only Jesus can fill. By the riches of grace and power of your Spirit, make Jesus the most beautiful and unavoidable reality in our lives.
Keep us restless till we rest in him (again), peace-less till Jesus is our peace (again), and thirsty until Jesus slakes our deepest thirst (again). So Very Amen
