“There is now (and forever) NO condemnation for those who are in Christ!” Rm.8:1. But there is conviction, and “whoever hates correction is stupid” Prov.12:1. “Correct the wise, and they will love you, correct a fool and they will hate you” Prov.15:1. “Whoever receives ‘life-giving rebukes’ will be at home among the wise, but those who disregard discipline despise themselves” Prov. 15:31–32.
Lord Jesus, scanning through Proverbs in my old NIV, I’m convicted by how many verses I’ve yellow-highlighted about the beauty of teachability, correctability, and “convict-ability.” I’d still highlight those same verses, because that’s who I want to be.
Precisely because we’re already forgiven, robed in your righteousness, and “non-condemnable” (Rom.8:1), we can live in the freedom of humility—quick to own our “stuff,” and quicker than ever to repent and repair. Thank you, Jesus, and may it be so in my life for the rest of this week. And longer, of course, but I want to be mindful for the next several days.
I’ve been a bit “pickily” this week and a bit self-righteous. But, hallelujah, you give grace to the humble and new mercies every day. Thank you for speaking so frankly, Jesus—“Whoever hates correction is stupid.” And thank you for speaking so tenderly—“Come to me all of you who are weary and heavily burdened. I will give you rest” (Matt.11:28). Thank you, Lord.
Jesus, I know I am not as free and loving, gentle and humble as you intend—but I want to be, and one Day I will be (1Jn.3:1-3). By your Spirit and all the riches of the Gospel, make me more like yourself before that Day. Thank you for taking the judgment we deserve and giving us the righteousness we could never earn. It’s our deepest peace and most profound hope. So Very Amen.
