Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Heb. 13:8
Lord Jesus, I’m not a big fan of surprises and change. I like controlled excitement and planned adventure; blessed familiarity and comfortable predictability. But until the Day of “all things new,” we live in a world of all things disruptable, changeable, and breakable.
Flights get canceled, and critters make our home theirs. New viruses emerge and old friends move on. A new “top dog” in org-chart makes life vulnerable for the “puppies” below. A cough turns into the flu. An old car dings our new one. A soaring stock market becomes a plunging one.
Jesus, we are thankful there’s one part of our lives that will never change, cannot be disrupted, and is always certain. And that is you and your great love for us. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Your love for us neither peaks nor dives, waxes or wanes—has a high tide or low tide.
That doesn’t make you predictable, or even less so, manageable. But it does mean that we can trust you and rest in your love, no matter what is going on in our hearts, circumstances, and world.
Disruption and change don’t have sovereignty; only you do, Jesus. Nothing is random in this world. Nothing catches you off guard. The scary becomes the sacred when we’re wearing the lens of the Gospel. Hard providences become the theatre of grace. Life isn’t about always “making lemonade from lemons”; but it is always about trusting you.
Jesus, help each of us accept disruption and change as parts of a better story than we could/would write for ourselves. You are writing our stories with a hand of love and the ink of grace. Until heaven, may we love you with abandon and serve you with gladness. So very Amen we pray, in your merciful and matchless name.
