“I was in my prime when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house” (Job 29:4). “A friend loves at all times” (Prov. 17:17). “Encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Heb. 10:25).
Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of friendship—for the heart-transforming union, intimate relationship, and vital fellowship we have with you. Being “in our prime” has more to do with knowing you, and being known by you, than with our blood work, heart rate, and lung capacity. You are the only friend we have who loves at all times, in every context, no matter our anything. We praise, bless, and adore you.
Jesus, we also thank you for the friends you’ve woven into our lives, stories, and hearts. This isn’t a Bible verse, but it’s certainly “in line with the truth of the Gospel”: “Blessed is she/he who is walking with a group of friends—a Gospel-posse who have nothing left to prove but the wonders of your love and the riches of the Gospel.
Friends who now listen quicker and give answers slower. Life-companions who “groan inwardly and wait eagerly,” for our coming life in the new heaven and new earth. Amigos/Amigas who share life in Christ and life on mission—savoring the joys, and accepting the heartaches of life between your resurrection and return.
Jesus, these cherish-worthy friendships turn our hearts heavenward, for you are the foundation and fountain of all true and lasting friendship. Thank you for befriending us in the Gospel. It’s overwhelming, settling, and centering to hear you say to us, “I no longer call you servants; I call you friends” (John 15:15). We are humbled. We are glad. So Very Amen.
