“All our busy rushing ends in nothing. (Psalm 39:6); “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” (Lam. 3:24); “Do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” (Mic. 6:8).
Heavenly Father, some of us begin this Monday with a schedule that’s already guffawing at us—actually mocking us, even blowing a kazoo in our face. We’ve got too many plates to spin, with too much on each plate, and too little grace in our hearts.
Help us remember this week what really matters, and Who matters the most. By the reckoning of heaven and the riches of the Gospel, life isn’t for proving our worth, making people happy, or preparing for retirement.
It’s about knowing you, honoring you, and enjoying you. We won’t add an hour to our lives by stress, worry, and barking at others. But we will rob ourselves and people we love.
Far better to do a few things well today than plow through our lists, treating people like projects, problems, and paychecks. Help us remember, the only thing that counts to you is our “faith expressing itself in love” (Gal. 5:6). Kindness trumps productivity. Our “to-love lists” must matter more to us than our “to-do lists.”
Father, you are our “portion“—that is, our joy, peace, and inheritance. Grant us the grace we’ll need to live, work, and play this week with kind and trusting hearts. So Very Amen.
